Partial Exits in a Prop Account: Keep Cash Result and Exposure Separate
A partially closed position has both a realised component and remaining exposure. Preserve the distinct executions before measuring either one. A profitable exit message is not enough to establish that a position is flat.

Start from quantities and unique fills
In a fictional linear position, five units entered at 100. Closing fill E1 sells two at 103 and E2 sells one at 102. The realised gross price result is 2 × 3 + 1 × 2 = 8 quote units. Two original units remain open.
If an export repeats E1, it remains the same execution. Counting it twice would overstate both the realised result and closed quantity. Retain account, instrument and execution identity rather than deduplicating unrelated fills solely because their prices match.
Add supplied costs and open valuation
With total supplied costs of 3 quote units, the realised net component is 5. If the remaining two units are valued at 99, their floating price result in this simplified model is minus 2. The combined supplied components are therefore plus 3, before any omitted charges or account positions.
A CAD report needs an explicit dated conversion if the quote unit differs from CAD. Residence does not make the quote unit Canadian dollars. Keep original-asset results and any reporting valuation separate from an actual external payment.
| Component | Calculation | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Gross realised | 2 × 3 + 1 × 2 | 8 quote units |
| Net realised | 8 − 3 supplied costs | 5 quote units |
| Remaining quantity | 5 − 2 − 1 | 2 units |
| Supplied floating / combined | 2 × (99 − 100); 5 − 2 | −2 / +3 before omissions |
Compare the full account observation
HashHedge’s guide distinguishes balance and floating result in its equity calculation. A realised plus 5 alone cannot establish current account headroom. Use the actual account observation, all positions and the applicable rule version.
The related resource retains this site’s earlier partial-exit method. The optional HashHedge affiliate link introduces the current programme, without promising a successful evaluation or encouraging an exit order. All fills in the example are fictional.
